Drawing The Human Face

LESSON  PLAN'S

LESSON  PLAN'S

Drawing Anatomy - Face

Objective: Concept / Topic to teach:
• Students will learn about Shape, Value, Line and Space, through drawing faces.
• Students will define drawing related terms.
• Students will create drawings in their sketch books of individual parts of the face as well as proportions and an overall image.
• Each student will create a portrait based on their own face as well as a character from a story.

Standards Addresses
Grade 6 –8   (1.2) Employing visual images. (1.3) Evaluating meaning and communication of art. (2.1) Use of the Elements of Art, and Principles of Art. (3.1) Identifying and using process. (4.1)Works of art from cultures, times, and places. (5.2) Critical Analysis and Aesthetic inquiry.
Math: Grade 8   (4.1) Transformations of objects can be used to define the concepts of congruence and similarity. (4.2) Direct and indirect measurement can be used to describe and make comparisons.
Literacy: Grade 8  (1.1) 1. Oral Expression and Listening. (2.1) 1. Quality comprehension and interpretation of literary texts demand self-monitoring and self-assessment. (3.3) Quality reasoning relies on supporting evidence in media.

Specific Objectives:
• Complete 3-4 drawings in their sketchbooks of each major part of the face (eyes, etc).
• Define terms: Line, Shape, Value, Perspective, Proportion, Space, etc.
• Develop a basic understanding of the structure of the human face.
• Draw a series of concept sketches of how they want their final picture to look.
• Create a final drawing based on their own face and combining it with a character from fiction or nonfiction.
• Learn about the Elements of Art; Shape, Form, Value and Space through a series of drawings

Required Materials:
• Pencil
• Paper
• Ruler
• Compass
• Magazines
• Pencil Sets
• Color Pencils
• Oil Pastels.

Introduction/ Discussion: Anticipatory Set:
The easiest thing for anyone to recognize is the human face. We are trained to see and observe it from the beginning of our lives. Students will be given the assignment of developing their artistic skill by drawing the human face through a series of drawings. To build an understanding of the total face it is important to master each of the individual features one at a time before putting them altogether. At the end of this project students will use their understanding of the face and basic drawing skills to create an original work of art. The final image will combine their image with that of a character to create a new likeness. It is a time honored tradition of artist to understand the human form and to be able to depict it in a realistic manner. These students will be able to appreciate the subtleties of the face as well as the Elements of art used to create its likeness.

Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. Start the lesson by asking the students describe what they think of when asked to imagine their own face. Have the students develop their vocabulary by defining terms related to the human anatomy and basic drawing.
Proportion - How parts of a work of art relate to each other and the entire image.
Shape - Is a two dimensional area that is defined by having length and height.
Relief - Is a type of sculpture in which forms and figures are projected from the front only
Geometric Shape - Are precise shapes that can use mathematical formulas to define.
Organic Shape - Are irregular shapes that are commonly found in nature.
Perspective - Is a graphic system that creates the Illusion of depth and volume on a two dimensional surface.
Point of View - Is the angle from which the viewer sees an object.
Line - The path of a dot through space
Value - The lightness or darkness of a color.

2. To prepare the students for the process of drawing the human face it is best to break the human face into separate sections first. Students will spend time drawing each the major features of the face such as eyes, ears, mouth and nose. Each class will be broken into a different part of the face with instruction on drawing the specific feature from different angles and emotions.  Before the student has mastered the different features they will be given a picture of that feature and asked to draw it from scratch. This process will require several drawings per section in the sketch books.

3. Once the students have mastered the individual parts of the face like the eyes, nose, mouth and ears students will be given a demonstration on putting them together and the correct proportions. Students should draw examples of the face at different angles and with different moods as a way to understand the process of creating a drawing of the face. These drawings should be completed in the sketch book and be used for future reference. To complete this part of the project students will be given an image to draw from and create their own version of in their sketchbook.

4. The final project will be a self portrait that each student will complete on a sheet of paper at least 16 x 20 inches in size. Each student will be asked to use a mirror or a picture of themselves to create a detail picture of themselves. This project is intended to take several classes and should be shaded in with detail. Students are encouraged to use strong emotions and or different poses from the common front view. Once completed students should have a good basic understanding of how to draw a portrait.

5. This project will be concluded with a portfolio review in which the students will present their works and critique the overall effect.

Summary / Closure:
After completing the project students should have mastered the concept of shape, form, line, and value. Each student will have an understanding of basic proportions and structure of different parts of the face.

Evaluation:  Assessment Based on Objectives:
The final grade will be based on the evaluation of the art piece, participation, effort, and quality of paper and art work.
• Students will earn a percentage for their Portfolio Review, both as presenter and as an audience member.
• Quality of the work done will be a large part of the grade based on how well they have demonstrated an understanding of the concepts and their depiction. Overall condition of the final drawing will also have a factor in the grading.
• Effort put into the project will be demonstrated by both the final images and the how well the student worked in class on each project. (Factors include: is the project completed, and does it look like the student worked on it and not other things?)
• The final individual piece will make up half of the project’s grade.
• A six week test on the vocabulary will also be used as a grade to determine the student understands of the subject matter.
• The Rubrics are made up of 5 categories: Project completion (30%), Participation   (20%), Originality (20%), Quality of art work (20%), and Follows directions (10 %).

Additional Components that can be included:
 Plan for independent practice:
Students may do research on how different cultures have rendered drawing the face throughout history.
Adaptations: (For students with learning disabilities):
This project for most students does not require any adaptation but if physical limitations prevent work to be done than it is advised that a report be given and presented to verify the students understanding of the subject matter.
Extensions (For gifted students): Students who complete the assignment early will be asked to create additional art work.
