Introduction/ Discussion: Anticipatory Set:
Through the course of history many artist have learned their craft by studying the works of other artist and trying to reproduce their works. This assignment is designed to use the knowledge that the students have gained over the school year through art history classes and give them the opportunity to exhibit their understanding. Each student will pick one artist from the list of artists that they have studied and must come up with an original expression of their own creation using this artist style.

Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. Start the lesson by asking the students to define terms related to Style/ Principles of Art
STYLE - The characteristic manner and appearance of the works of an individual artist / school / movement / or period.
PRINCIPLES OF ART - Guidelines that govern the way elements go together.

MOVEMENT –   Art that leads the viewer through a piece of work.
EMPHASIS - Making an element or object in a work of art stand out.
ZEITGEIST - Refers to certain elements , characterizing the mood thinking, and resulting art from an art movement
RHYTHM - The repeating of an element to make a work seem active.

2. Over the course of the school year students have been exposed to numerous famous artists and given tests on the knowledge that they gained. This assignment is meant as a way for the students to express their understanding of the artist by creating an innovative piece of art based on one artist’s style. Each student must pick one artist that they feel the strongest connection to and come up with a drawing of what they wish the final image to be. The final piece of art can be completed in whichever medium the student best emulates the original artist preferred style. If they wish they can create a modern twist on a work of art but the end result must have an obvious connection to the artist that they have chose.

3. For a sketch book project students will create a sketch of the image in which they wish to create for the final project. This drawing should be similar to a study and have a great many of the final designs worked out prior to the final work. Students are to create a work that is in the style of a famous artist or recreate a famous painting in their own design.  Each piece is meant to be a black and white drawing but needs to have a good feel for value and other elements of art in its makeup. If needed students can bring in pictures of the original work of art or other inspirational images that will aid them in the final piece.

4. The final painting will be done on a large sheet of paper or watercolor paper (at least 11x 14 inches in size) and can be done in any medium. The final image will depict the students understanding of how the artist they are imitating would create a piece of art. The goal of this project is for the student to gain a better understanding of how the original artist was able to create their masterpieces. Each piece must either use the style that the artist is known for or it can use one of the artist’s works of art and recreate it in a new vision. Students are not allowed to copy an original piece of art exactly as the original artist did but they must come up with their own take on the artists work.

Summary / Closure:
After completing the project students should have mastered a basic understanding of one artist of their choosing and what it took to create their masterpieces.
The students will have a completed a series of drawings as well as developed a basic understandings of the historical importance of their artists contribution to mankind.
A final piece of art will be completed depicting a student’s representation of their subject or style of, in a convincing manner.

Evaluation:  Assessment Based on Objectives:
The final grade will be based on the evaluation of the art piece, participation, effort, and quality of paper and art work.
• Students will earn a percentage for their Portfolio Review, both as presenter and as audience.
• Quality of the work done will be a large part of the grade based on how well they have demonstrated an understanding of the concepts and their depiction. Overall condition of the final pieces will also have a factor in the grading.
• Effort put into the project will be demonstrated by both the final images and the how well the student worked in class on each project. (Factors include: is the project completed, and does it look like the student worked on it and not other things?)
• The final drawing / painting / etc… as well as the several examples of different images will be combined to make up half of the project’s grade.
• A six week test on the vocabulary will also be used as a grade to determine the student understands of the subject matter.
• The Rubrics are made up of 5 categories: Project completion (30%), Participation   (20%), Originality (20%), Quality of art work (20%), and Follows directions (10 %).

Additional Components that can be included:
 Plan for independent practice:
Students who are at a higher level or who have class on a greater number of days will also be given the added task of creating a second art project using a second artist methodology. The students can also be given the task of researching an artist who has not been covered during the normal course of the school year.

Adaptations: (For students with learning disabilities):
This project for most students does not require any adaptation but if physical limitations prevent work to be done than it is advised that a report be given and presented to verify the students understanding of the subject matter.
Extensions (For gifted students): Students who complete the assignment early will be given the added assignment of creating a second art project using a second artist methodology. The students can also be given the task of researching an artist who has not been covered during the normal course of the school year.
